    • Louvre - one of the largest oldest and most famous art museums in the world with a rich collection of various exhibits. The museum is located in the heart of Paris, on the right bank of the Seine.

      The museum is located in Luўrskіm Palace (Palais du Louvre), which was originally a fortress built in the XII century in the Age of Philip II. Remnants of the fortress are still visible. The building was repeatedly expanded before take the form of modern Luўrskіm Palace.   

      For the first time the museum doors were open to the public Nov. 8, 1793, during the French Revolution. Then there was an exposition of 537 paintings. Size of the collection increased during the Napoleonic era, when the Louvre was renamed the Museum of Napoleon (MuséNapol eéon).

      Currently, the collection of the Louvre has more than 300 thousand exhibits of different epochs and civilizations, but only 35,000 are displayed in the halls. Among them we can find reliefs of the Assyrian palaces, Egyptian art and much more.

      The most famous exhibits of the Louvre: The Code of Hammurabi, Venus Mіloskaya, Nike of Samothrace, Mona Lisa (Mona Lisa) and other works by Leonardo da Vinci, Rembrandt, Titian, Liberty on the barricades brush Delacroix.

      Over the past few years the Louvre tops the list of the most visited museums in the world, which is an influential British magazine The Art Newspaper (TAN). In 2011, the museum was visited by 8.8 million art lovers.
