Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière is located on the top of the eponymous hill overlooking the town. In ancient times, this place was the ancient forum of the Roman Emperor Trajan. The Basilica was designed by Pierre Bossan in combination of two architectural styles: Neo-Byzantine and Romanesque.

Construction of the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière on a hilltop in Lyon was conducted at the expense of citizens and lasted more than twenty years - from 1872 to 1896. This religious building embodies the triumph of Christian values over the socialists of the Lyon commune views.

The countdown begins the history of the basilica in 1643, when the district was raging plague. Several residents of Lyon continuously prayed to the Virgin Mary with a request for the salvation of the city. After some time, the epidemic ceased, and the inhabitants of the city decided to thank the Virgin Mary, building a church in her honor on the hill. On the day of the celebration of the bicentennial of a miracle for little church spire was raised a statue of the Virgin Mary. Since then, every year on December 8 in Lyon Festival of Lights is held.

History repeated itself in 1870. During the capture of the Prussian army in Lyon city residents reiterated their prayers to the Virgin Mary. A few days later the army Bismarck turned back.
The first sketches of the project were made Bossano Basilica in 1846, and construction began in 1872. But finally, all works were completed only in 1964, when it was completed interior of the temple: mosaics, sculptures and stained glass windows.
